Little India in festive mood
Wednesday, 03 November 2010 18:33

PENANG'S Little India is busier than ever as Deepavali approaches. Shoppers are tempted by displays of traditional tasty treats like muruku, as well as brightly coloured clothes made of silk or cotton for them to welcome this once-a-year celebration. Shops there, some of which have been in business for decades, are also known to sell spices, jewellery and of course one can't forget about the cuisine!

Some have started celebrations early. A Deepavali carnival, organised by DiGi, was held from October 31, and locals and tourists alike had the opportunity to soak in the atmosphere as performers gracefully danced in the streets to traditional Indian music, embracing a culture that is rich in history, colour and life.

This Festival of Lights is celebrated in Malaysia in the seventh month of the Hindu calendar. It falls this year on November 5. The festival involves the lighting of lamps, symbolising triumph over evil. On the morning of Deepavali, a ritual oil bath is carried out to cleanse the body and soul and mark a new beginning for devotees. Devotees would then visit Hindu temples to pray and receive garlands. Entrances to the temples themselves are decorated with kolam, intricate floral patterns that carry religious meaning.

Penang's Little India, located at the heart of the George Town World Heritage Site, was one of the earliest planned areas under Sir Francis Light's administration.
