Christmas gifts at Little Penang

Christmas at Little Penang Street Market
AS CHRISTMAS approaches, many people start to recall the headaches and nightmares that surround choosing the right gift. The best ones are often personal and reflect the festive spirit, but they are also the most difficult to find.

The Little Penang Street Market (LPSM) last weekend spared many people these pains. Those fortunate enough to visit it were greeted by many creative gift ideas with Christmas in mind. The most appreciated were the hand-made and home-made ones that in some way reflect a personal touch for one’s Christmas shopping list.

Although there was no live programme on that day, as a reflection of respect to the late Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu whose funeral was held on Sunday (November 28, 2010), the market still attracted a sizeable crowd with a strong Christmas spirit.

Held on the last Sunday of each month, LPSM in Upper Penang Road has become a major venue in Penang. Since its inception in July 2006, it has continuously displayed a wide range of artistic, cultural and culinary products, especially the uniquely-Penang ones, and thereby highlighted the diversity of Penang's heritage. Throw in some French pastries and imported collectibles into the mix and the market is a hit with both locals and foreigners alike, resulting in a wonderful ambience.

The market is run by a committee of volunteers under the auspices of the non-profit Penang Arts Council. It exhibits around 70 arts, crafts and food stalls, an art gallery, and a space – called "The Space" as a live platform for Penang’s performing arts community. Children are not forgotten as there are plenty of entertainment and activities for them.

LPSM also prides itself as a promoter of community-based crafts by empowering the marginalised through creative employment and involvement.  In addition, it is committed to being eco-friendly by encouraging environmentally-friendly products and packaging made of recycled material, and providing recycling facilities in the vicinity.

Skilled and talented vendors are encouraged to participate at the market, especially traditional trades, as there is growing concern that these crafts are slowly disappearing off our daily use and off the streets. LPSM is also bent on reviving people’s interest in the diverse and vibrant cultural aspects that once provided Penang and its people with a strong identity.
