Secondhand books at Chowrasta

A DYING BREED, the secondhand booksellers of Penang, usually of Mamak origin, once thrived on Jalan Macalister and was a part of the state’s lure with tourists and locals alike. Their bookstores held a milieu of titles, mostly stacked in a random but charming manner that allowed readers to explore further into whole new worlds on each visit. One could often find most fascinating books on travel arranged alongside the most famous Shakespearean works or academic text next to romantic novels.

Originating in Lebuh Teck Soon, they subsequently moved to Jalan Macalister. Later they were moved under protest to a small section above the butchery section at Chowrasta Market. The picture in the slideshow below were taken at the market in March 2009.

Read here for Prof Ghulam’s interesting chronicle of the "Mamak booksellers of Macalister Road" and here for a bit about the Mamaks in Malaysia. Mamaks are also known as Tamil Muslims, wiki here.
