Citizen journalism makes dramatic impact
Sunday, 10 May 2009 11:20

ON THE evening of May 7, dubbed “Black Thursday”, a citizen journalist captured on video the arrest of Suaram activist Ng Eng Kiat at a candlelight vigil in Penang. View here. This power of the people’s media was also clearly demonstrated earlier in the day in Ipoh when the pandemonium at the Perak State Assembly was captured on video (view here and here) and reported blow-by-blow via Twitter (read here). All these show that this genre of journalism, spearheaded by the likes of Anil Netto, is fast becoming matured and sophisticated.

In Penang, while we continue to wait for more clarity on Penanti, the following political events are noteworthy:

  • The Penang Umno liaison committee and the Permatang Pauh Umno division have submitted separate candidate lists to their leadership. Read here.
  • Umno Youth says it is ready. Read here.
  • PAS will not field a candidate (read here). Otherwise, it could be a six-cornered fight. Read here.
  • PKR candidate Mansor Othman wants to mend ties with PAS. Read here.

Apart from politics, three other issues have captured a fair bit of attention:

  • Penang Hill Railway "upgrade": Penang Heritage Trust has come out strongly against the move calling the railway a “priceless legacy” (read here) while an articulate “Poor Hill Resident” has come out in favour. Read here. For more on Heritage & Culture in Penang last week, read here.
  • Land scam case involving former administration: In a move to avoid a contempt of court motion, the state government has agreed to pay a deposit of RM14.7 million. Read here. It also wants the MACC to question the former administration (read here) and has agreed to cooperate. Read here. Former CM Koh Tsu Koon and former Exco Teng Hock Nan, however, have said they would not attend the inquiry. Read here and here.
  • MPSP in the spotlight: MPSP, after being told to buck up (read here), declares it is in the black after eight years. Read here.

For the record: iGeorgeTown has put up CM Lim Guan Eng’s statement on World Press Day. Read here.
