TRANSPORT and traffic management have always been a bone of contention for Penang. Currently, a host of projects to counter the state's transport woes which have been in the works have since progressed. The federal government is going ahead with a RM50 million plan to introduce water taxis and build more jetties in Penang and mainland. Designed in three phases, it is to target the foreign tourists in the first, domestic tourists in the second and the general public in the third. Read here- Signboards and the drawing of bicycle emblems on the road will be completed by end of the year (2009) to mark dedicated bicycle lanes in both the Youth Park-Teluk Bahang and inner city heritage areas. - While it was earlier reported that the Penang state government had given the green light to build and commission a RM70-million monorail test track on a 30-acre site in Batu Kawan (read here), the state government now has declined to confirm the deal. Read here
Meanwhile, blogger Anil Netto, wonders if the specifically set up Penang Transport Council was even consulted on any of these projects. He laments that the lack of coordination and integration from all parties involved would only disallow the bigger picture to be achieved. Read here

Other news International city bid on the right track: Penang is on the right track towards becoming an international city. The state had recorded several firsts that had given it an impetus toward striving hard to attain international recognition. YTL to develop project in George Town heritage area: The heritage enclave of George Town in Penang may see a waterfront development soon. It is learnt that YTL Corp Bhd will embark on a project, through joint-venture company PDC Heritage Hotel Sdn Bhd, to build luxurious condominiums and an eatery on a 1.4ha seafront site adjacent to the 124-year-old Eastern and Oriental (E&O) Hotel along Lebuh Farqhuar.
