THE Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) caused a stir when it approved an application by Jiran Bina Sdn Bhd to exhume graves from a site in George Town. According to the MPPP, the application correctly followed procedure, leading to a permit to be issued to Jiran Bina. The next-of-kin of those buried in the graves have been advised to contact Jiran Bina.

In a related incident, a Chinese graveyard in Batu Lanchang is about to be exhumed by developers, leading to an outcry by some 47 descendants of those buried there. The descendants claim that they had not been consulted. Read here.

In spite of protests, demolition has already begun at the graveyard, soon after Taoist priests performed morning prayers. "An important page of Penang history has been torn out," said historian Tan Kim Hong. Read here.
