Pit bulls sentenced to die
Monday, 30 May 2011 19:55

IN spite of public outcry, four pitbulls, two of which were responsible for the mauling of an Irish tourist earlier this year, will be put to sleep.

Penang Municipal Council president Patahiyah Ismail said that the council will be following the magistrate court's decision on April 4 last year. “Any appeal is to be made to the court as it is the court's decision and not the council's. The council cannot go against the court's decision." Read here.

In response, the dogs owners, Joseph Teoh and his wife Teoh Bee Eng, have filed an emergency petition for a judicial review to buy themselves time. The dogs are due to be put down on Tuesday. Joseph did not sound optimistic about his chances. “At this point, we have no other choice but to take a legal recourse. We are not sure of our chances but at least we would have tried our best to save the two dogs," he said. Read here.

Red paint and a pig's head

Muslims going about on their morning prayer received a rude shock on Wednesday morning when they passed by a cendol stall that had been splashed with red paint, and a pig's head was left hanging from it.

Penang police chief Datuk Ayub Yaakob said that the stall owner had received a mysterious warning by phone back in March. "The caller did not make threats but reminded the stallholder to be careful. Police have not dismissed that the case is linked to secret societies," he said, warning others not to turn this incident into a religious issue. Read here.

The police are now attempting to trace the caller, but acknowledge that it will be difficult as the man had used a public pay phone. Meanwhile, a blogger had accused Umno of being responsible for the incident, which Nibong Tebal Umno Youth vice-chief Mohd Noor Azman Abdul Jalil denied. Read here.
